Virginia Tech Modem Pool (VTMP)

The Virginia Tech Modem Pool (VTMP) is a dial-up service offered to university PID holders for off-campus connectivity. Please visit computing.vt.edu for information about PID eligibility. The VTMP is offered as an affordable service to the university community. CNS acknowledges that existing and emerging connectivity technologies may offer faster connection speeds and greater data transfer capability, though at a cost generally greater than the VTMP. Before subscribing to the VTMP, we urge users to carefully read the VTMP Disclosure Statement and the information presented here. Users should also read through the Acceptable Use Standard and be familiar with Virginia Tech's Information Systems usage policies.

To use the VTMP, your modem should be configured to dial 540-232-7000. If you are using the VTNet cd, the software should automatically be configured with the right number and settings. If you are experiencing problems setting this up, you can call the VTOC at 1-6780.

Departmental Rates and Billing

The service rate for VTMP Service is $9.90 per month. A $6.00 processing fee will also be billed to new and re-activated VTMP accounts. The monthly service fee is prorated for new and cancelled accounts. VTMP service is billed for the current month. In other words, when you receive your June 1st bill, you are paying for June service rather than May service.

Please see our rates page for more information on these and other fees.

Students

Students may activate and deactivate service via the Customer Online Access (COLA). Students who have never had service with CNS are required to make initial service requests in person at the CNS Student Network Services Office. A valid Student ID is required.

Faculty/Staff/Other PID Holders

All other PID holders must complete a VTMP Application Form and return it to Communications Network Services via campus mail (Mail Code 0506) or fax (540-231-4800).

Managing Your VTMP Account

Student VTMP account holders can manage their accounts online using the Customer On Line Access (COLA). COLA allows you to view payment information, cancel service, re-activate service, and pause the service during breaks.
