Using the Virginia Tech Modem Pool (VTMP)

Communications Network Services (CNS) of Virginia Tech provides 56k V.90 dialup services to affiliates of the University Community. Since Fall 2000, CNS supports 64k Integrated Services Digital Network connections, know more commonly as "ISDN". Users of the VTMP should be familiar with Virginia Tech's Acceptable Use Standard which explain proper usage of university systems.

Modem Pool FAQ

Q. Why can't I connect at 56kbps?

  • Actual 56k connections are not permitted under regulations set by the Federal government and telecommunications agencies. The industry standard is 53.3kbps.
  • Quality of the telephone lines between the user's location and the Virginia Tech modem pool: line noise causes a decrease in the rate of data transfer.
  • User's modem may not be running on the V.90 standard. Standards such as 56kFlex and X2 will not connect at 56kbps.

Q. Can I use two analog modems at the same time to get a 112kbps connection?

  • No: Virginia Tech does not support PPP Multi-link for analog modems.
