Using the Virginia Tech Modem Pool (VTMP)
Communications Network Services (CNS) of Virginia Tech provides 56k
V.90 dialup services to affiliates of the University Community. Since
Fall 2000, CNS supports 64k Integrated Services Digital Network connections,
know more commonly as "ISDN". Users of the VTMP should be familiar with
Virginia Tech's Acceptable
Use Standard which explain proper usage
of university
systems.
Modem Pool FAQ
Q. Why can't I connect at 56kbps?
- Actual 56k connections are not permitted under regulations set by the Federal
government and telecommunications agencies. The industry standard is 53.3kbps.
- Quality of the telephone lines between the user's location and the Virginia Tech
modem pool: line noise causes a decrease in the rate of data transfer.
- User's modem may not be running on the V.90 standard. Standards such
as 56kFlex and X2 will not connect at 56kbps.
Q. Can I use two analog modems at the same time to get a 112kbps connection?
- No: Virginia Tech does not support PPP Multi-link
for analog modems.
Troubleshooting Steps
No connection or VTMP does not answer?
- Ensure the telephone line is connected properly.
- Make sure you are dialing the correct telephone number. The Virginia Tech
modem pool is reached by dialing 540-232-7000.
- Directly connect the modem to the junction box on the outside of the residence.
This will bypass all inside wiring that may be impacting connectivity.
- Call CNS Network Operations Center (NOC) at
540-231-6780.

Unsupported Configurations
- Softmodems may experience call drops, slow speed, and unstable transfers.
- CHAP is not supported.
