Hokies Domain Users Connecting to VT-Wireless
Question:
How do I connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network in Windows XP using my Hokies credentials?
Answer:
The following are required to connect to this network:
- Windows XP (Service Pack 2) with all current updates and patches available through Windows Update applied.
- A valid Virginia Tech Hokies ID and password.
- Open "Network Connections"
- Right click on wireless connection icon in the system tray
- or Start > Control Panel > Network Connections
- Right click on Wireless Networks, select "Properties"
- Select the "Wireless Networks" tab, click the "Add" button
- In the "Associations" tab:
- Check "Connect even if this network is not broadcasting"
- Network Name (SSID): VT-Wireless
- 802.11a/g users:
- Network Authentication WPA2
- Data Encryption AES
- 802.11b users:
- Network Authentication WPA (WPA - Enterprise)
- Data Encryption TKIP
- In the "Authentication" tab:
- Check Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication for this network
- EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP)
- Check "Authenticate as computer when computer information is available"
- Click the "Properties" button:
- click "Validate server certificate"
- scroll down to Thawte Premium Server CA and click the box next to it
- Under "Select Authentication Method:", select "Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)"
- Click "Configure"
- Check "When connecting: Automatically use my Windows logon name and password" if you want to log into the VT-Wireless network automatically
- Click OK on the "EAP MSCHAPV2 Properties" window. Click OK on the "Protected EAP Properties" window. Click OK on the "VT-Wireless properties" window.
- Make sure "VT-Wireless" is selected under "Preferred Networks" and click "Move up" as many times is necessary until "VT-Wireless" is at the top of the list. Click "OK" and you're done.
