China Numbering Plan Change18 February 2003
In 2002, parts of China began a numbering plan change. For a 6 month period, calls could be dialed using the old numbering scheme or the new scheme. After the permissive dialing period ends, attempts to dial old numbers will reach a recorded announcement. After April 20, 2003, only the new dialing plan will work. Area codes in Huangyuan and Huangzhong change from 972 to 971, while
the digit '2' is prefixed to existing 6-digit subscriber numbers to form
new 7-digit subscriber numbers. Area codes do not change for Geermu, Guoluozhou,
Haibeizhou, Haidong, Hainanzhou, Haixizhou, Huangnanzhou and Yushuzhou,
but the digit '8' will be prefixed to existing 6-digit subscriber numbers
to form 7-digit subscriber numbers. In international format, the summary
of changes is as follows:
Many places in area code 520 will change to areacode 512. New 8-digit
subscriber numbers will be formed by prefixing the digit '6' to existing
subscriber numbers in Suzhou and Wujiang, and digit '5' for the other
affected places. This change is effective now. Any attempts to dial using
the old numbers will reach a recorded announcement until April 19, 2003.
