Attorney General warns of alleged sweepstakes scam

27 September, 2004, 4:53PM - Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore issued a consumer alert warning State residents to be wary of direct mail pieces that offer huge sweepstakes prizes in exchange for entry fees. The alleged scheme asked recipients to send $10 to $20 and the consumer's telephone number to a mailing address in Clive, Iowa in exchange for entry into a sweepstakes that offered large prize winnings. The consumer responses were then compiled into a very "hot" list for further exploitation, such as telemarketing scams operating from Canada.

This warning applies to direct postal mailings, NOT emails or phone messages. However, it is vital to be alert for scams in any form.
